The Goldendoodle

Lovable, beautiful and playful, the wavy good looks of the Goldendoodle have become a frequent sighting in neighbourhood parks and trails in recent years. A truly versatile dog, they offer endless good nature, striking intelligence, and an easy going disposition.

Goldendoodles were first bred in the 1960s, but became popular in the 1990s. They are a cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever. Renowned for their Hypo-Allergenic coats, some Goldendoodles do not shed, and offer a wonderful option for families who experience dog-related allergies. Other Goldendoodles take on more of the characteristics of their Golden Retriever heritage and shed a whole lot. Shedding Goldendoodles are usually not allergy-friendly. If allergies are a concern for you, its really important that you educate yourself about the variety of Goldendoodles available.

Because doodles are a hybrid of 2 distinct dog breeds, when considering the first generation; F1 Variety, the coat quality and size of each puppy can vary within each litter. F1 generation Goldendoodle puppies can and do shed.

When bred for F1B (second generation), Ponsonby’s Goldendoodles have more predictable coats. They can be wavy or curly, are virtually non shedding, and are usually allergy friendly.

Poodles have a long and lean in build. The build of a Golden Retriever is sturdy and more compact. Ponsonby’s Standard Goldendoodles (45-60 lbs) will be fluffy, light blonde to dark apricot in colour, with an even bone structure and a smooth and steady gait. They are highly trainable, gentle, and don’t bark very much at all. Goldendoodles need plenty of time outdoors every single day. They thrive with families that enjoy hiking and spending time outdoors.

Ponsonby’s miniature Goldendoodles are bred for the same beautiful colour and good nature, but they grow to be smaller (35 lbs and under) and require more time and attention than their Standard sized cousins. They too enjoy walks and outdoor activity, but don’t require quite as much as a Standard sized doodle.

As puppies, all doodles with be more energetic during their first 18-24 months of life. As with most dogs they will settle into routine as they age and after they are spayed or neutered. Love, time, patience and puppy school is always recommended!
